This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (UWRF). The theme for this year is ‘Atita, Wartamana, Anagata: Past, Present, Future,’ which is quite intriguing as it encourages us to contemplate the state of the world in the past, today, and in the future. The UWRF scheduled to take place from October 18 to October 22, 2023.
During these dates, there will be a multitude of events to attend, including book launches, musical performances, poetry slams, and of course, the Main Program, which always delves into fascinating themes.
Insight Bali was present at the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2023 press conference held on October 18, 2023. Notable attendees included the senior journalist, writer, and cultural figure, Goenawan Mohamad.
During the press meet, a question was raised regarding the challenges of being a writer in Indonesia. GM’s response quite thought-provoking, as he pointed out that in Indonesia, people don’t read, which poses unique challenges for writers.
After the press session, I approached GM and inquired further about the challenges of being a writer in Indonesia. To reach a wider audience, writers need to step out and promote their work on a national scale, I explained.
However, GM responded with a question of his own, “What exactly is a national writer?”
I attempted to clarify that a national writer one who nationally recognized, with their work known throughout Indonesia. GM then replied that new writers in Indonesia don’t necessarily need to become national writers. He believes that being a good writer can thrive in their hometown. Furthermore, according to him, national writers living in Jakarta may not be as famous as people might think.
This statement seems to hold truth because a good writer can continue to be excellent and remain in their hometown.
Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2023 is also a delightful celebration. I have always enjoyed the moments of moving from one stage to another. The reasonable distance between stages makes switching between events very exciting. Sometimes, it can be a bit frustrating when two interesting events overlap.
The main events at UWRF consistently address intriguing topics, including environment, humanity, literature, and other fascinating subjects, discussed and explored by speakers who have written and researched extensively in those areas.
Art and performance events are also enjoyable to attend. Film screenings with interesting themes and stories usually draw a full audience. It’s not uncommon for producers or directors to attend and engage in discussions directly.
In addition, poetry slams highly anticipated. Contemporary-style poetry readings often headline and are followed by enthusiastic fans. The poems presented are consistently interesting and impressive.
There are also music concerts and art exhibitions with diverse themes and works.
Participating in the UWRF has always been a comprehensive experience, offering deep satisfaction in listening to intellectual luminaries discuss important matters.
Reflecting on the past 20 years, UWRF has undoubtedly reached a new milestone as one of the most anticipated festivals worldwide. Nestled in Ubud, this festival adds significant value to the Ubud and Bali regions.
It feels like in the years to come, people will continue to joyfully visit and celebrate at the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival.
